Select SqlDataSource1 from the Choose Data Source drop-down, and you ll see the grid reconfigure itself to the fields that the data source exposes. Enable paging, sorting, and selection by selecting their check boxes in the Tasks pane, as shown in Figure 12-16.

This portlet.xml deployment descriptor is very basic because we do not use any portlet preferences, more than one portlet, or more than one locale.

Now that you know what the SOM is, let s put it to use to create a schema for our Employees.xml file. The schema will have three simple types: Simple type for name: This simple type represents names used in our XML document (first name and last name). It restricts the name length; the minimum length is 3, and the maximum length is less than 255. Simple type for phone: This simple type represents phone numbers (the <homephone> element of our XML document). It enforces a restriction requiring phone numbers to be no longer than 20 characters. Simple type for notes: This simple type represents notes (the <notes> element of our document). It enforces a restriction requiring the notes entered to be no longer than 500 characters. These three simple types will make a complex type that represents an employee. The complex type consists of the following:

Run the application. You ll see that you can select different pages on the grid, select items on the grid, and sort the items by clicking the column headers. However, every time you do this, you ll see a postback to the server and a page blink (see Figure 12-17). Notice the status bar progress at the bottom-left-hand side!

The <employee> subelements will be of the complex type I just mentioned. To create the schema by using the SOM, you need to create a Windows application like the one shown in Figure 5-12.

Now let s see how easy it is to turn this into an Ajax application. As with everything else in ASP .NET AJAX, the first thing you should do is add a ScriptManager object to the design surface. Once you have this, add an UpdatePanel. Drag the DataGrid onto the design surface for the UpdatePanel (see Figure 12-18).

Our directory structure for the to-do list portlet application is the normal web application structure. Our tag library JAR files are in WEB-INF/lib. The TLD files are in WEB-INF/tld. The JSP files are also under the WEB-INF directory, in WEB-INF/JSP. Our Java classes and deployment descriptors are in their usual place. Figure 5-4 shows our portlet application structure in the Eclipse IDE s Navigator window.

Now when you run your application, it will be an Ajax one, and you will not see the full page refresh when you perform an action on the DataGrid. For your reference, here is the full HTML markup for the page. Despite the pretty complex functionality, no C# or JavaScript coding was required.
